Sunlight

I saw you there upon the square,
Knowing at once that I loved you.

“How could this be?” worried me –
I tried hard to keep my distance.

For you were young, just begun
And my heart already married.

I would not destroy for love nor joy
Your future nor my life’s contention.

But, it didn’t work out for me – you see?
Circumstances conspired to release me:

Launched and knowing how good life can be,
I see your heart has grown – and now wonder.
