Lone Wolf

The End When Beginning

The mother wolf had done all that she could to get the pack’s pups to safety, expecting nothing in return, for she knew it was her duty.

When at last they had reached the higher grounds she had kept them dreaming of, she collapsed in a flump, unable to travel any further.

She could smell the sweet grasses swaying gently, and her heart could be content that at last their children would find plenty.

What more could she want – but to give into the now inevitable darkness without further struggling?

As she closed her eyes to succumb to oblivion, she caught a glimpse of her youngest returning to pull her up by her scruff, back onto her feet again.
