U-turn at freeway junction
To help a lady removing
From edge-center lane
Where previous car hit
‘Is it still alive – any hope?”
“I’m not sure” / “Show me”
Scrambling to catch, I fall
Reminded limbs don’t work
She helps me up and we
Put it in a bag for transport
But the vet isn’t licensed and
Wildlife support doesn’t call
Needed pain killers and
Help to stop blood’s flow
Gently placing it in a container
In blanket with grass and water
With aded B-viamins for shock
I encourage, “It’s your choice”
Returning later eve to dull eyes
Grieving that its soul passed on
But at least it was protected
In its final hours with honor
