Black Wolf
Having retreated back into her human form in desperation to stop injury’s pinging, she could not understand his language nor intuit what he wanted from her.
He stood there stiff-legged with hackles flared, growling at her and asserting his will – but when he realized that she couldn’t “hear” him in human form, his anger shifted into deep irritation and the intensity in his eyes began softening.
His aggressive direction backed down as he searched the perimeter with eyes, ears, and nose sensing and turned his side to her to indicate that he was there to protect her.
She carefully reached out and touched his thick and now smoothing luxurious fur, finding his warmth and comfort radiating out toward her as he accepted the gesture.
And when she laid down to rest again among the thickly piled fall leaves, he padded around her a couple of times – then curled his back up against her’s to provide needed support and keep watch as the night vigil’s guard for her.
What?
“What do you want?”
(Heart racing and confused)
Heart–Wake
She was dozing, trying the fall asleep, when suddenly directly in front of her a huge black wolf snarl-lunged as it loudly barked with challenging admonishment toward and back away from her face with jaws wide open baring fangs to make sure that it had captured her attention while directly staring into her eyes.
Her heart and body jumped, startling her awake from this sudden vision.

Digging.
She was digging
Fast.
Deep.

Be Still.
Be Still.
Be Still.
Exposure
She couldn’t overextend, anymore.
Not without protection from her mate.
Going Feral
She began avoiding the others, reversing course when she came upon bustling activity.
Realizing that she now had a reactive suddenly-scared-as-starled-effect response from the new head trauma, she vowed that if that male who’d gotten too close to her today tried anything, she would rip him into shreds to prove that she was not so easily taken advantage of.

In The Dark
She sent out a low howl, testing as sounding, trying to figure out what had changed in her environment while scenting for where he could be – and if he needed her.
Inner Conflict
Self-isolating has been key to survival by staying light on one’s feet and less trackable.
To love leaves marks and imprints, tracing stories upon the firmament.
Yet without love life is empty – lacking meat’s sustenance.
Cloak & Shield
Sometimes she changed word tense and phrasing to hide her location in order to mix up signals and protect her destination.

She didn’t want attention from other males.
She just wanted the bond with her mate.

Barely Holding On
She’d been afraid of this
His presence promised
That at summer’s end
She’d have his comfort

Hurtling toward winter

Sucking delicate dreams
From marrow as atones
Believing in saving grace
From love’s healing balm
On Her Own, Again
She was afraid to howl for him, flinching at the implied sting of rejection.

Faded Tracks
She went back to the area, but that had not been her usual place. And he was gone, long gone. Vanished without a trace.
Silver Pride
Maybe it wasn’t about aging, but about the trials she’d endured and the respect she was due for them.
Pupling
“Nyeeer-rooom!” stomp-running down wooden reverberations hall to smack into whatever still object (hopefully soft) with an “Oomph!” and giggle, followed by a mirthfully satisfied, yet downplayed, gleefully settled “Hi.”
Blood Ties
Being around her thriving family began making her blood seek ways for healing.
Mothering
She would do her best to ensure that they felt safe in their new homeland.
Providing
It wasn’t just the injuries that had complicated and bogged down her functionality, but the loss from pack members leaving that had been core essential to her striving’s original purpose.
Now that new members had joined her inner circle, she began experiencing traces of renewed strength and strategies’ vision returning.

Playful Endeavors
He was feeling disconnected and unsure about everything, wondering if he had made the right decisions.
Passing by in focus to keep managing things, she diverted, caught his eyes, and lightly paw-slapped his face.
“Naughty Wolf,” she teased him.
And with a flick of her tail in his direction, set off again.
