They Weren’t Expendable
Many people say to let the animals roam freely outside, and if they get injured or killed, so be it.
But we came to know, love, and protect our beloveds, and valued their happy well being.
Dear Alex,
I keep the household going by the frizzled fumes of my exhausted, yet valiant efforts.
The resources that I have been depending upon are dwindling too rapidly, and I am worried while working to regain business income before these gap fillers run out.
And our new tiger is, of course, a handful, with a loud, strong yowl that keeps going whenever he doesn’t get what he wants.
While his addition to our family has been a type of stabilizing blessing, the frequent mind and emotional pinging has been breaking down my nerves on a daily basis.
Maybe the load is exacerbated by my also having to manage the pack’s dynamics as I work to safely acclimatize them to each other, as well as pressured struggling to save our beloved ranger.
I almost had to make “the call” to let her go this week, but then by a miracle of inspiration tested her desire to eat by syringe feeding.
Fortunately, she has been ravenously responsive, and I am hoping that she’ll regain weight by my frequent hand-feeding her as I encourage, snuggle, and praise her.
It is frightening to have almost missed this opportunity to help prolong her life when she very much wants to keep living.
She has several medical complications that we are treating, so it has been difficult to figure out what care has still been missing.
Meanwhile, our hound’s opportunistic love of food and big-hearted caring has resulted in her generously grooming our ranger after each feeding, which they both enjoy as they warm up by the fire and I fret about possible roughness vs. fragility.
And, as I had hoped that the hound and tiger would get along together, it is a huge win that they tease and play with each other rambunctiously.
However, all of this is being a lot to supervise.
The wolf sides with me regarding the overwhelm, giving an occasional warning growl or bark at times because the tiger loves her fluffy tail and sneaks up on and pounces upon her from many angles in attempts to innovatively engage her.
Wolf is mostly tolerant and supportive by taking part in the social thrum of our new front room dynamics, but she gets a little cranky at times because she is going blind and cannot easily track him.

Home Again
With the addition of our tiger’s 7 month old successor, the house is bustling and lively again.
Of course, I am overwhelmed and overworked in trying to attend to everyone’s introductions and needs.
But the hound and he seem to be as perfectly-matched playmates (supervised, for sure!), building further upon past precious traditions, and our ranger has someone interesting to pique her interest.
Our wolf, per usual, is aloof and tolerant – and keeps alert for when the food is ready!

Paid Forward
“Why would you think your telling me this would make me happy?
Especially since your offer of friendship with me was a lie?”
Time Alone
Sometimes, there can be too much.
Fever
There comes a time when
Only one thing can appease
A wounded soul that would freeze
Without ire’s heat to keep comfort.
Younger Men
They may be
Accelerating
But I go
Farther…
Still, they
Are better
Than older men
Who stop trying.
Dear Alex,
I did not think you would seek to understand me.

Hey!

You – there!

Who’s To Blame
Believe in me
I’ve said to you
But you ran away
Stagnant blue
What I gave
Was unwanted
My passion seen as a
Threat to be avoided
How can it be that
Men are so blinded
They think they can
Get away with nothing
Expecting the woman
To provide as a mother
And hating her
Just the same.
Loved-Starved
If one is and has been,
How does one reset?
How can starvation be
Fed to appeasement?
How is one to believe
Nourishment can last
If history limited to
Temporary repast?

When In Need
A friend helped me yesterday to move items that had been blocking my progress because I could not manage them on my own without causing reinjury.
I hate having to wait for this slow-as-molasses healing.
Those challenge items kept me stuck in disarray for months while I tried to function around them!
So when my friend took her leave and tried to impress upon me that I “had done enough for the day,” I thanked her, closed the door, and dove into the side projects that our progress had exposed.
Of course, today I am suffering in neck pain and discoordination for the overexertion beyond neural and muscular tolerances.
But, I couldn’t let things spiral apart again by leaving various messes.
I needed to capitalize on the sudden clarity and ride its course of momentum.

Empty Road
“I am not sure that it is possible that I will find a worthy partner whom I can trust and who will work well with me.
I have just not seen any good candidates in my generation, while I have witnessed the decline of valuing values in our society.”
A Sense of Home
“When I was younger, we moved into a large, two-story home with the original front unit covered in brown shingles, which made it blend well into the environment.
The back portion was a more modern add-on with an additional room below and stairs that led up to an open office and a large bedroom with a beautiful bathroom and jacuzzi tub.
We first got our sassy brown tiger there, and then, our two Somali queen and ranger kittens.
We had small , yappy Papillon teenagers that were loving, competetive, and drove us all crazy – which seemed appropriate for a bustling, thriving family.
And as members of the local 4-H club, we had many varieties of standard to exotic chickens, and our first thriving garden that included young, fruit-bearing trees.
We lived on a large corner sandy lot with a big back yard, a huge elder pine right behind the house, and tall eucalyptus trees draping along the driveway.
There was also a several-nooked, partially enclosed front yard with a simple pond that we put in on the far left corner when looking out from the porch.
Our home’s entrance seemed to beckon and welcome, inviting friendly visitors to come stay and play with us awhile.
I loved seeking out and adding “magical” plants to the landscape, such as soft and fragrant groundcovering chamomile.
Eventually, we even had a family of crows bring their children to visit, and a pair of hawks nested their babies high above us.
It was a time and place for new beginnings as our children entered their teens, and I had so much hope for their having the brightest future.”
